There are many ideas out there for dealing with toilet training accidents. We have researched this topic and would like to share the following idea with you.
If you find your child is still having accidents, even after doing a lot of preparation and intensive work with toilet training, you can try Positive Responses Practice. This is an intensive practice where the child practises going to the toilet after they have had an accident. Doing this a number of times (10) will reinforce when they need to go to the toilet and the procedure of what they need to do when they actually get to the toilet.
You can help your child out with not wetting their pants by.
- Checking your child’s pants or reminding your child to go to the toilet every 30 minutes. Make sure you give them lots of positive praise if their pants are not wet or soiled.
- If you child has wet or soiled their pants try not to get angry. Nagging or threatening your child is not going to help them achieve dry pants. The only thing that will help your child is practice.
The Practice
- When your child has wet their pants use the place they wet their pants as the point the child returns to and starts the exercise again. If you are not sure, choose a spot.
- Ask your child where they go to the toilet or what ever word you are using for toilet training. If you get no response, you suggest they go to the toilet. Before going to the toilet you help them change their wet pants, trying to speak about the pant wetting episode as little as possible.
- Return to the spot where the last pant wetting happened and take your child to the bathroom. The practice should include pulling down underwear, training pants or pull ups and sitting on the toilet, wiping their bottom, getting back off the toilet and pulling their pants up, ending with washing their hands. Try not to talk to the child during this time just run through the motions of the practice. Return to the spot again and repeat the 10 times. You can let the child know how many times they have practiced.
- Don’t be tempted to stop the practice as practice is the best way to help your child achieve toilet training success.
