Is gift-wrapping a puppy going to bring unconditional love? Not quite…

10 Votes

Puppy PrepWith Christmas coming up and many birthdays of families and friends in the coming year, you may be considering a cute puppy as a gift for that person.

There are many things to consider when choosing a pet and these things even more so come into play when choosing that pet for that special someone.

Consider this, over 144,000 animals are dumped at the RSPCA each year. Even more than this number are dumped at other shelter and rescue organisations across the continent. Close to half of these are humanely euthanized due to lack of space or unsuitability for re-homing.

Of those surrended in NSW & VIC, 72% are surrended due to owner reasons such as moving home, rental problems, allergies in family, travelling, children bored of pet, animal unsuitable for owner, impulse buy or the pet was an unwanted gift.

Don’t allow your kind-hearted gift to become the next statistic:

  • Instead, consider giving your friend or relative a voucher to purchase pet products for their new pet or make a voucher yourself stating that you will pay for the purchase of a pet of their choice. Choosing a pet can be a very personal process.

  • Along with the voucher, give your friend or relative some information brochures on food, local vets, puppy training, pet care etc.

  • Encourage your friend or relative to research the type of pet that is best suited to them. Maybe they would prefer an adult dog from a shelter rather than a puppy.

Remember, not everyone thinks a cute puppy is the best source of unconditional love.
