Feeling 'shut out'

Parent’s often feel ‘shut out’ when their child start’s ‘big school’ , they are no longer allowed to walk in and out at any given time to collect or drop off their child as they have been at childcare, the teacher is not available to have a chat to at the end of each day, that’s called ‘ door stopping’ and is unappreciated at ‘big school.

So how do they find out about the child’s day... ask them of course!!

A typical question all parents ask their kids is “what did you learn today?” The children reply with “nothing” or “I don’t know”, kids instantly seem to speak a new language. You may have seen it recently on a TV commercial for a cereal, the teenager grunts and shrugs as his mother asks questions about his day, this is a universal language used by all kids and if your child is starting school next year, you too will need to learn how to understand it... or.. maybe as parents we are asking all the wrong questions?

Latest research has provided a new insight into how children respond when using parent – to-child language. Instead of asking your child what they learnt or what they enjoyed the most but rather” what did your teacher say about your work today?”
