What to do:
- Be aware that some of the expected symptoms such as a stiff neck and a purple rash may not appear at all. Symptoms may also be different from person to person.
- Don't wait for the rash to appear if several other symptoms are present and the patient is unwell or deteriorates quickly.
- If any rash does appear with any of the above symptoms, treat as a medical emergency and seek medical advice immediately.
- The drinking glass test - also know as the pressure test - press a clear drinking glass firmly against the rash. If the rash fades it indicates a harmless rash. If the rash does not fade under pressure it indicates a septicaemic rash. This test is not 100% accurate, especially in the early stages of illness and can give a false sense of security. Test must be readministered at regular intervals.
- If you are at all concerned it is best to seek medical advice.
