Danger Danger! Proceed with Caution!

lisataylorI am often amazed at the thoughts of my 4 year old Elly!
When we were getting ready to go out for lunch on Fathers Day she insisted on getting herself dressed, this is an area fraught with danger!  She could come out looking beautiful in the new dress we bought or she could come out in some mismatch from her cupboard. This day was to be the mismatch day!  It consisted of black dancing leggings, pink frill skirt(usually kinder only), long sleeve white top and purple t- shirt over the top, pink socks and old blue shoes.  Sounds OK but wasn’t really her best outfit.
When I suggested another option I was met with a big sigh and a dramatic fall to the floor.  “Well Mum” she said, “You get to wear what you want everyday so I want to wear what I want everyday!” How could I argue especially when my grinning husband said “Well that is true!” And it is true!
So Elly went to breakfast feeling confident that she had made some excellent choices and that she had some control over her environment.  Imagine what that does for her self esteem and self confidence.  I went to breakfast feeling proud that I have a daughter who is independent, observant and able to effectively express herself.

Wanting to change her clothes was all about my view of the world and what I wanted and sometimes we need to take a look from our children’s perspective and understand  how important making their own choices is to their development.
What’s the funniest outfit you have had to walk next to?

  1. Long sleeve top and long pants with a dress over the top. Underneath that we had a skirt and a singlet with wings all teamed up with a pair of crocs! Aren't I pretty Mummy?!?!
