Never work with kids or… celebrities. But don’t tell that to tertiary graduate Maha who enlisted the support of Matt Moran and Ricki-Lee Coulter to help fulfill her childhood dream of being a television presenter.
Maha was supported by The Smith Family to complete her education and has directed a video around the theme “When I grow up” in the hope that other kids like her can receive the support of The Smith Family to realise their potential. The video will promote the 2010 Winter Appeal to raise funds for the suite of education and learning programs The Smith Family delivers in 95 communities around Australia.

For Maha, the appeal is of particular significance. Motivated by a desire to escape the political turmoil of Iraq, Maha and her family arrived in Australia in 1994 and were confronted by the inevitable difficulties of moving to a foreign country. As Maha remembers, “we had no one to help us and we had to start afresh.”
It was during this time that The Smith Family played a pivotal support role. Upon entering year three, Maha became the recipient of one of The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Sponsorships. The sponsorship connects children with others in the community who can help them develop the skills and capacities they will need to reach their potential and to navigate their journey through life.
From the outset, this program had a profound influence on Maha’s life. As she concludes, “we were able to wear the proper uniform in school and participate in all the activities without being left out”. With continued support throughout her education Maha has recently completed her Bachelor of Communication and secured her first job in the media.
