Many people think that teaching a baby to read should begin with the ABCs. Or that a baby is not “ready” to learn maths. Or that learning more than one language at a time will overwhelm her.
During the first few years of life, your baby’s brain is highly capable of absorbing information through pattern recognition. It’s how she recognizes your face without you needing to slowly show him pictures of your nose, then pictures of your hair, then pictures of your eyes and so on!
Being highly capable to recognize and register patterns also means your baby is able to learn language without you needing to break down grammar rules and sentence structure first.
It also means that your baby can recognize whole words without you needing to break it down into ABC’s first. Or learn maths by recognizing the actual representation of the number, instead of trying to memorize formulas.
It is in fact harder for your baby to learn the parts of a whole than it is for her to learn the whole itself.
Imagine if you taught your child language by not talking to her in normal sentences on a daily basis, but instead by telling her one word at time and telling her the rules of stringing together the adjective before the noun, and so on.
It’s simply faster and easier to teach a child to recognize whole words in the first six years of life, recognizing word patterns is second nature for any child and their rapidly developing brain.
The Institute for The Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia has for over 50 years been teaching parents how to help their children to recognize words in this way, their methods are also of enormous benefit for special needs children to find out more…
