Oxfam Unwrapped gives you a fun and educational way to teach your children about the true spirit of Christmas – the joy of helping others.
When you buy a gift from the catalogue, your donation helps support Oxfam programs that the item represents and in return you receive a card to give to your child explaining how they are helping others.
While the Oxfam range includes goats, pigs, ducks and chickens that provide lifesaving support to poor communities, one of this year’s new gifts provides disadvantaged Indigenous children with a healthy breakfast.
$20 helps the Doomadgee State School in the Northern Territory provide one child with fresh fruit, toast, milk and cereal for a whole month, going a long way to boost their health and concentration at school.
A selection of the other Oxfam Unwrapped Christmas gifts are listed below, and are available online at www.oxfamunwrapped.com.au, by calling 1800 034 034 or at Oxfam shops in major shopping centres around the country.
Goat $39
Giving a goat is the Oxfam Unwrapped tradition because one goat soon turns into a whole herd, which can be sold for money or donated to other families so that they can breed them and also benefit from their milk and manure.
Food for a Child $60
In East Timor, children often suffer from high levels of malnutrition during the “hungry season”. This gift helps mothers in East Timor prepare nutritious meals to keep their children healthy during these hard times.
Pig $35
Pigs work hard to help communities in need, and this gift supports Oxfam’s work with communities in mountain regions in Vietnam. Oxfam trains people how to care for and raise the piglets, which can then be sold at local markets, providing families with much-needed income.
Cooking Set $39
Because it is very difficult to get food to people in emergencies, Oxfam often provides kitchen sets, containing plates, cups, spoons and saucepans with nonperishable food to ensure families are able to cook maize and rice and stay healthy in difficult times.
Calf $203
A Christmas calf is a gift you can milk for all it’s worth as they allow people to plough more land and bring in a bigger harvest, letting them earn money that they can use to send their kids to school. Once the calf grows into a cow and has a calf of its own, it can be passed on to another family who can also benefit.
Ducks $20
Ducks are not only cool gifts, they make financial sense for families in need. Ducks provide families in Mozambique with eggs, which can either be eaten or sold at the market for money that can be used to send children to school or buy essential medicines.
Bicycle Ambulance $296
In communities like Malawi you don’t need flashing lights and sirens to get people to hospitals fast, you just need pedal power. Bicycles are cheap and effective way for healthworkers to get emergency patients and pregnant women to hospitals fast, and save lives.
Chicken $10
Chickens are not just fun and feathered, they help young people in remote areas earn a living. Poultry rearing is a great way for young people and women to earn money for themselves and provide for their families.
Mother and Baby $55
In rural Cambodia, health services are limited and expensive. By buying this gift, you will help Oxfam help poor women gain access to health centres and hospitals when they need them, and support the training of people in the community to help mothers through pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood.
