Our bloggers
While our sons aren’t reading yet, they do enjoy reading.

Both love climbing on to Harvey’s or my lap with a book so we can "read a story". When it’s finished there’s always a sly little grin from Noah as he asks for another story, and another, and another until we say no. Ethan, too young to say what he wants, then finds one of his books and points out familiar pictures to us as we read the text to him...from blogger: Joh to read more, click here.
I like to think I know a thing or two about young children and reading.  Other parents with pre school-aged children often ask me if they should start teaching their kids to read, and my answer is always NO.  When it comes to teaching young kids to read, I say DON’T.  I know that’s a controversial start to this post, but it is what I believe as a teacher, educational writer, literacy advocate, picture book lover and mother...From blogger: Catherine to read more, to read more click here.

Most parents want to know that they are leaving their children in a safe and caring environment and of course your child wants to feel safe and secure too. There is no doubt that handing over your child, to somebody other than family or friends is an emotional time. Just remember you are not alone, these feelings are completely normal. Along with dealing with your own emotions, it is more than likely that the emotions of your... to read more, click here

Bullying

Dads, this has been written from a student perspective so you can easily pass it directly on to your child. We recommend you read and act accordingly.

If you are the victim of bullying it is important you stand up and seek help. It is not OK to be bullied and you don’t have to put up with it.

YOU HAVE RIGHTS
You have every right to feel safe, especially at school. Your school will have policies in place to address bullying, so you can do any of the following:

  • Talk to a school counselor or teacher and ask them to help you do something about it
  • Tell your parents so they can talk to the school about it
  • Tell your teachers or the principal, so they can address the bully/bullies
  • Keep telling people, until someone helps you

Sensitive kids worry about what others think of them. They often sense danger well before others and they see the consequences of behaviours well before their peers.

Is this sensitivity nature or nurture? I suspect the former is the culprit. It has been estimated that 15 per cent of children are born with a more sensitive temperament. That is, a temperament that makes them particularly... to read more, click here
