Dear Readers...

Valentine’s Day is special for me, not because I celebrate it with ‘Mr Right’, but because my son Cristian was born on Valentine’s Day. I suspect I will be second in line to any girlfriends in the future to celebrate his birthday with him, so I make the most of his birthdays now. He is turning 15 on Sunday, we are having a pool party with a Hawaiian flavour. I can remember the day he was born as if it were yesterday, and if I close my eyes and breathe in, I can smell his baby smell. He is my first love, Emily my second. I thought I loved my husband until my children were born and I discovered maternal love - nothing surpasses it

Pregnancy is an emotional, physical and spiritual journey for couples, filled with joy, expectation, hormonal tears and labour fears... a 9 month rollercoaster ride delivering a bundle of joy in a life changing moment. Savour it, love every kick, cry, gurgle and smile, every little thing your baby does shapes who he/she will become and it’s such a joy to be a part of!

10 things you should pack for hospital

Your own shampoos, soaps and lotions. You'll be much more refreshed and feel much better if you can shower and brush your teeth with your familiar products after you've been through labour and delivery.

Bedroom slippers and lots of socks.

A pillow or two. Hospital pillows are not always comfortable.
Lip balm. Because you won't be allowed to drink anything during labor, you will get dehydrated.

Maternity underwear. Many pairs. You will need them.
Something to read. But nothing that requires anything approaching rational or intelligent thought.
Something non-perishable to eat. Stash some granola bars or juice boxes. Even better, have a stash for your husband or birthing coach. Those hospital vending machines full of pop and weird chips look pretty unappetising at 3 a.m.

A nursing bra. Even if you don't know if you're going to nurse, you'll appreciate having one.
Camera and film. Just toss a disposable in your bag so you know you have one.
A girlfriend. Preferably one who has given birth. After all, when it comes right down to it, giving birth is women's work.

Congratulations from all the Parenting Australia team to James Randle, our financial editor, and his wife Anna on the birth of their second daughter, Lucia Rose, last Friday!
