Dear Readers...

Getting ready for ‘big’ school starts about this time of year and creates an air of excitement that ebbs and flows for the remainder of the year, up to and even beyond your child’s big day.
Parents get very caught up in school readiness for their children and often in the process forget to consider what this big leap means for them. I remember feeling very shut out, there was no more walking in and out of my sons childcare at any time to drop off or collect him, no more ‘door stopping’ the carers at his centre . Cristian was out of reach for 6 hrs a day and when i went to collect him after school, I would get a series of grunts as I asked about his day. I had to wait for the parent/teacher evening to get feedback. Grief is what my child starting school meant for me... unexpected grief mixed with unbridled joy for my son and even though I had a one year old and I was working AND for months was caught up in the flurry of school readiness, I had no idea I would feel so barren.
Raising children has been a series of letting go and developing a family/life/work balance which seems to be an ever changing landscape and set of challenges I seem by default to meet. I look back now and know in my heart I would not change anything. For those of you with your little one’s heading off to ‘big’ school next year, my advice to you is to make sure you plan a busy week for yourself, those first few days are long, but you will come to love school and all the new friends you will make, it will expand your life too. There will be tears but you and your child will survive and eventually thrive. |

| Starting School - What Should Your Child Know? |
Starting kindergarten is one of the biggest milestones for you and your child. Many parents and children feel anxious about this time in their lives, but they need not. The process can be painless and enjoyable, with some simple preparation.
Once you have decided on the right pre-school or kindergarten for your child, there are some simple strategies you can master at home, in order to facilitate your child’s commencement at school. They include developing their fine motor skills and developing a routine, in order to provide the basis for the skills which your child will learn at school: language skills, writing skills, mathematics, personal/social and physical skills.
Examples of the types of skills your child will be expected to have mastered are outlined below:
Recognizing their written name, and starting to use a pencil to form their own name |
Sitting in a circle and sitting still |
Singing and sharing jokes |
Understands the concept of sharing |
Recognising basic shapes and colours |
Unpacking their own lunchbox |
Dressing themselves and tying their shoe laces |
Toilet and hand washing |
General knowledge about the world such as days of the week, alphabet, weather etc
Counting and recognising the numbers 1-10 |
Ensure your child is confident to do these tasks by themselves before they start ‘big school’. Talk to your day care centre or pre school centre director and find out what they are doing to prepare your child for school. |

Pre loved uniforms are usually sold in good condition. Find out when your school uniform shop operates a pre loved stall and save heaps. |
Save $$ by avoiding designer lunch boxes, bags and stationery and purchase anti bacterial food storage in your local supermarket, which your child can decorate and personalize themselves. |
| |
Label, Label, Label! All personal belongings, including uniforms, shoes, hats, socks raincoats, bags, sunscreen, anything and everything must be labeled your child’s full name and class. |
Speak with your tax advisor about expenses you can claim for ‘back to school’ and ensure you keep receipts for claimable items. |
Avoid getting into a lunch order habit and prepare packed lunches that will provide enough nutrients and energy to see your child through the day. It’s easier to prepare at night and pop in the fridge and you can slip a little 'I love you' note from Mum in sometimes too. |
