Dear Readers...

I am a year 2 class rep and our school fete is in November. On Sunday the children and I went to another fete to check out the competition and look for some stall ideas. The ‘throw a ping pong ball into a fish bowl and win a goldfish’ was by far the most popular stall. I am certain we were the only family to leave without a fish, Emily whilst in line for a sausage fell into a manipulatory heap and wailed, “It’s not fair, I only got a sparkly bag and a sausage, I want a fish!”. I swiftly responded with, “Why don’t you go and sit on that bench over there and when you can say, 'I’m so happy I got a sparkly bag and a sausage' come back and join us?”. Less than a minute later she returned, beaming with gratitude and we had a great day. There are always little moments that need to be ‘nipped in the bud’ and whilst I would have loved to have caved in and bought the fish, I know I would have been undermining her character.

Speaking of fish.... Three weeks ago I received a note from Emily’s school about book week and a costume parade where the children had to dress up as their favourite book character. Waves of panic swooped over me - I can cope with life’s challenges as a sole parent of two and the ups and downs of career but ask me for a homemade costume for a second grader and I loose it - I cannot sew. As the days passed Emily was getting excited, her class was buzzing with costume ideas... then it came to me, the Rainbow Fish! We cut out scales from a roll of foil and coloured cellophane and I stapled them on the an old sea green cotton shift dress, it cost less than $10 and looked fantastic!

We have been busy this week with the re-development of our website (nearly there!), you can now comment on the blogs or post them to your social network sites. We are soon to launch a directory, it’s very exciting.

House Rules

Family Rules are something we all use in some way. We suggest if your children are a little older to sit down with them with a piece of paper and make the rule writing an interactive activity, allow the children and parents to work together on making rules you both agree on. We have put together a general list of some house rules which can also be used for topic ideas in writing your own house rules. Every family has their own set of rules and what works for some families may not work for others.
