Dear Readers...

Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman’s life, for all the discomfort there is equal joy and anticipation and if we take extra special care of ourselves, Mother Nature will do the rest. We are acutely aware of our primal instincts and intuitively know how to nourish and care for our unborn child. We crave spinach, steak or a milk shake with our body translating our baby’s needs and telling us when to rest - we are no longer in the ‘drivers seat’. Personally I could not fight of the tiredness of early pregnancy and have never experienced anything like it, surrender was key for me. Go with the flow, listen to what your body is asking, Mother Nature is in charge and she will ensure your baby’s needs are met.

One of the best pieces of pregnancy advise I was given was don’t let people tell you their ‘horrific’ birthing stories. The pain that comes with childbirth is pain with purpose, a positive purpose, a bit like going to the gym as opposed to breaking a leg. Think positive and remember there is always pain relief if it’s too much to bear. A medicated mother will bond with her baby just as a mother who has a natural birth will bond with hers, no matter what a male midwife in England has to say...

This weeks discussion topic

British midwife Dr Denis Walsh has sparked controversy over his claims mums are taking the easy way out of childbirth by having epidurals and pain-relieving drugs. He believes that women should endure the agony of labour, which is a rite of passage for building a special bond with the child.
The president of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists , Ted Weaver, said the comments were 'offensive'. "I think it's drawing a long bow to say that people don't bond well with their child," Dr Weaver said.

Choosing a maternity bra

As your body changes as your baby grows purchasing a maternity bra becomes very important investment for both you and your baby. By about 4 months you should purchase a maternity bra if you haven’t chose or needed to earlier in your pregnancy. This will help you feel more comfortable. It is recommended that you do not use underwire bras while pregnant or breastfeeding as this can block milk ducts and cause mastitis.

Flying while pregnant

  • Book and isle seat or specially request one if you don’t have priority seating
  • Discuss your travel plans with your doctor before flying
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Don’t sit the whole time, if safe move around the plane to prevent blood clots.
  • Position the seat belt under your tummy rest on the tops of our things.

The RACOG suggests the safest time for a woman to travel when pregnant is during her second trimester which is between 18 to 24 week gestations.
