Dear Readers...

Recently at a Chinese Restaurant my daughter Emily had an anaphylactic episode. One minute she was fine the next she was being rushed to hospital. She had no previous history of allergic reactions and thankfully she made a full recovery. I have since researched and discovered some information I would like to share with you.

Allergies are very common and affect about one in three Australian’s at some time in their lives. In reality, allergies affect all Australian’s, in that most of us know an allergy sufferer. It is important that as a community we are aware of simple ways we can help limit exposing our friends and our children's friends to ‘triggers’.

Petrochemicals are by-products from petroleum refining, and can actually cause drying and irritation to the skin. Why put petrochemicals on your and your babies skin when theres a natural alernative?!
Paw Paw ointment with Calendula is especially formulated to soothe, moisturise and protect your skin. In a natural moisture-rich base, it is perfect to moisturise dry, chapped or sunburned lips, soothe cracked nipples, calm and protect against nappy rash and care for dry, cracked or irritated skin.

Q. If I start feeding my baby solids after 6 months, will she have a reduced chance of developing food allergies? - Kym, Newtown, NSW.

A. More research is needed to determine the optimal time to start solids. Based on the currently available evidence, many experts across recommend starting solids from around 4-6 months. There is little evidence that delaying the introduction of complementary solid foods beyond 6 months reduces the risk of allergy. There have been some suggestions that delaying introduction of foods may actually increase (rather than decrease) allergy, however at this stage this is not proven. There is also insufficient evidence to support previous advice to specifically delay or avoid potentially allergenic foods (such as egg, peanuts, nuts, wheat, cow’s milk and fish) for the prevention of food allergy or eczema. This also applies to infants with siblings who already have allergies to these foods.

Eating out with kids with allergies

Parenting Australia loves...

Disposable nappies contain chemicals which may contribute to irritation in children with skin sensitivities. Issy Bear cloth nappies are unique, they are made with a stay dry liner(inner) of suede cloth which is chemical free. Suede cloth works just like a disposable. It draws all the moisture from babies bottoms and takes it into the very absorbent insert inside the nappy. The moisture is then locked in to the insert and baby is kept dry and irritant free. www.issybearnappies.com.au

7 Top Tips to avoid exposing your child to trigger foods at daycare...

Educate your child not to trade or share food, food utensils and food containers.

Ensure your child only eats lunches and snacks that have been prepared at home.
Label bottles, other drinks and lunch boxes provided.
Speak to your centre director to ensure the use of food in crafts are restricted according to your child’s needs and that staff preparing food are  instructed about measures necessary to prevent cross contamination during the handling, preparation and serving of food.

Ensure they have a photo of your child as an allergy alert displayed for staff awareness - particularly casual staff.

Ensure your Doctor completes an action plan which is given to your centre - Click Here

Remember that if you felt overwhelmed and frightened about your child’s allergy at the start, so will others when you first tell them. Give them small amounts of information to begin with and allow them time to digest and understand it. Most people want to help as best they can.
