Raising the future generation of Australians is often an under valued task in terms of the support we receive from Government as the Federal Budget due to be presented this evening will no doubt confirm. Pregnant women due to deliver pre the next election will not receive Government funded maternity leave although many may have voted for Kevin Rudd on the promise of it. Bad luck girls you will need to head back to the polling station to get it for your next baby.
Lets not dwell on broken promises. This weeks eNews is focusing on pregnancy a time of great joy and anticipation. The subject is so vast that we decided to present it in 5 editions across the year, this week we investigate morning(or in my case all day) sickness and mercury in fish in an attempt to dispel some of the ‘myths’.
Congratulations to all our pregnant mums to be, take special care.

Babies developing in the uterus seem to be most vulnerable to the effects of mercury on their nervous systems. Research is ongoing, but women should be selective about the kinds and amounts of fish they eat during pregnancy.
- Avoid fish with high levels of mercury
-
Limit other fish, such as tuna steaks, to one portion per week or two 140g cans of tuna per week. |
Fish that contain higher levels of mercury include:
| Shark |
Gemfish |
| Ray |
Orange roughy |
| Swordfish |
Ling |
| Barramundi |
Southern bluefin tuna. |
Fish with lower mercury levels include:
Shellfish including prawns,
lobsters and oysters |
Salmon |
| Canned tuna |
