This week I am going to share my experience of Mother's Day with you, as a child and as a mother.
My father committed to raising my sister(14) and I(7) as a single father when my mother abandoned us for greener pastures with her lover. We woke up on a school morning and she simply wasn’t there and we didn’t see or hear from her again. I can’t describe the grief of maternal abandonment as it is a life long process which gets easier with age yet more inexplicable as I travel my own journey of motherhood. My children are close to the age we were when ‘Mummy' went away and nothing on earth would ever possess me to leave them.
Mother’s Day and the lead up to it was painful. At school it was eagerly anticipated, an excitement I could not share. Mother’s Day was everywhere. It would feature in window displays and on TV and radio advertisements and yet for me it didn’t exist - I just wanted it to hurry up and go away and I am certain my father did too.
Fear that I would be incapable of maternal love almost prevented me from having a family of my own. I know I am not alone in my maternal experience, it was not my fault, it was nothing I said or did, there are simply women who are not capable of motherhood.
I celebrated Mother’s Day for the first time when I was 32 as a new Mum to baby Cristian. Mothers Day took on a whole new meaning and as the children have grown older each Mothers Day has surpassed the last, every mouthful of the cold fried egg and weak coffee delivered to my bed is savoured. I am filled with gratitude and joy at the priceless gift I have been given, the honour of parenting my children.
In 2006 I received a letter from The Salvation Army Family Tracing Unit in England. My ‘ mother ‘ wanted to find me after 39 years. We did reunite in 2007 but that’s another story.
Treasure your Mum and relish every moment of your Mother’s Day. I know my message is a week early but I get swept up in the anticipation these days and couldn't wait. We also have some great offers for you pre Mother's Day including a free Curves $100 voucher.

10 Top tips for Yummy Mummys!
Brought to you by Curves
|
- Get moving. Any exercise is better than none. Once you start to build up your fitness, you'll be amazed at how quickly you feel the benefits of a healthier body.
- The best exercise program for you is one you will stick to. Find a routine that works for you, and make it a habit.
- Don’t think of exercise as a duty but as a choice. It’s your time to devote to your body and health because your wellbeing is important to you. Go with a friend, or join a place where the environment is welcoming.
- Bigger muscles create a smaller body. In order to increase your metabolism and achieve permanent weight loss, you must increase your muscle mass. Muscle burns calories so you can actually eat more food without gaining weight, and strength training is the only way to do this.
- Working out should NEVER be painful. Make sure your workout helps -not hurts.
- Don't be a slouch. Stand or sit up straight at your desk, in the car, when shopping! Hold your head up high, and tighten your belly. The more muscles you use during any activity, the more fat burning your body will do.
- Stretch. Stretch in the morning and at night to warm the body up, and relax it after a long day.
- Drink water. Water acts a natural diuretic, and helps flush out your systems of toxins, Coffee, tea, juices and sodas don't count, you need 8 glasses of pure water a day.
- Think small. Set small, specific goals. Goals like ‘losing weight’ or ‘gaining muscle’ are too general. Be more specific - reaching a certain dress size, losing 5 kg. Break your goals into smaller chunks so you can see the results.
- Keep track. Chart your progress to keep track of your workouts and improvements. Whether it's fat loss, building muscle tissue or just feeling better, keeping a log will motivate you.
Remember It's never too late to start!
